5 ways to tell if an egg is fresh or rotten

1. Check expiration dates
All eggs purchased at the supermarket have a recommended expiration date printed on the packaging.

Furthermore, French legislation requires the distributor to stop selling eggs 7 days before the minimum best before date (MBE) indicated on the packaging, as explained on the Femme Actuelle website.

However, if you're buying eggs from a hen house, there's no recommended expiration date listed. It's worth knowing that the expiration date (DLC) is a maximum of 28 days from the date of installation.

However, eggs can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one month after the recommended expiration date, which is 58 days from the day they were laid, provided the shells are not cracked or broken. Storing food in optimal conditions helps maintain freshness, prevents mold formation, and actively combats food waste.

Maintaining the cold chain and adherence to deadlines is essential to prevent pathogenic organisms from posing a health risk. Therefore, storing eggs in the refrigerator helps preserve their flavor and nutritional properties and prevents bacterial growth.

However, you absolutely must not wash eggs that you won't eat immediately, as this could damage the protective film the hen leaves on them. However, if dates aren't listed on the packaging, you'll need to find other ways to check if they're expired.
