Reasons why you might wake up with tingling in your hands

If you're like me, you're certainly no stranger to that tingling sensation in your arms, hands or fingers when you wake up.

A familiar but unsettling sensation

You probably know what I'm talking about: when your muscles seem to have gone numb and it takes about a minute before you fully regain feeling.

But what does this strange sensation really mean? Often described as "tingling", it can manifest as numbness, prickling, or even a burning sensation in the hands, feet, legs or other parts of the body.

Tingling sensations explained by science

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, its exact name is " paresthesia " and it is characterized not by a sensation of pain, but rather by discomfort that can appear without warning (i.e., not just right after waking up).
