The silent illness before goodbye
A young animal lover, Jessie Dittrich, asked a veterinarian what the most painful part of his job was. The answer moved thousands: the hardest part wasn’t the final injection, but what happens before.
The veterinarian explained that around 90% of owners leave the room before their dog closes its eyes forever, unable to cope with the pain of saying goodbye.
Meanwhile, the dog—confused and sad—continues searching for its owner. It looks around, tilts its head as if to say, “Where are you?” For years, that human was its world: fed it, cared for it, loved it. And now, in its final moments, it searches for it.
Unlike humans, dogs don’t have a concept of death the way we do. They don’t think, “I’m dying,” but rather, “Where is the one I love?”
